Let's Play Math!

This program is being put together with the hopes that children will learn to love math. I taught dance for almost 20 years to children ages 2-13. My hope was always that by making dance FUN when the children were young, that I was instilling a love for the art in them and that it the passion would stay with them always.

I found I failed to bring that same concept into our home with math for our daughter. At the age of 7 she began "hating" math. It was a daily battle. Me getting out her math workbook and her crying and whining and begging to PLEASE not make her do math. It was awful on all of us.

As I've learned over the past 4+ years homeschooling, our (now) 7.5 year old loves to learn through play. So why have I not continued to make MATH about play?

And this is where our brand new program, Let's Play Math, is born!

PHILOSOPHY:

Children will learn the fundamentals of math through hands-on learning games. You will watch as your child is PLAYING math. Many of these games are Montessori inspired and open-ended. Some activities will seem extremely simple to you and it is intended to be that way. Math does not need to be worksheets, upon worksheets, upon worksheets. Once the child masters the concept, you will review it with your child here and there, but they will not need to continue drilling with anything more.

Many of these concepts will build upon one another and you will find when your child is ready to move forward. I will present these activities and games to my children on a "math shelf". Our math shelf will be just as simple as it sounds. I will have a cube shelf out for our children where they can find these games and play with them together each day. We will spend 30-45 minutes per day playing these games together. Some of the games and activities will be things we do outdoors with no printables. We may use sidewalk chalk and a dice. We may be counting sidewalk squares during a walk. We may be challenging each other to a Yahtzee tournament. And other days, we may be doing speed rounds of flashcards. No two days will look the same. And your child will NOT have to sit at a desk doing math worksheets.

I will be including some worksheets here for you in this program as a way for you to test or show what your child is learning, but they will not be necessary to do daily, or even weekly.

I want your children (and mine) to master these math concepts while PLAYING. After all, we are only a child once...
