Playroom: LEGO Organization

Our son Liam is obsessed with LEGO! He is six and already flying through large sets. He built 90% of our Harry Potter Diagon Alley set alone last summer. I love having his LEGO bricks out in the open for him so that he has easy access to them. It's his go-to hobby and we find him sitting around his LEGO area many times a day.

I know there are a lot of opinions when it comes to LEGO organization. As he gets older, he may prefer to organize them by type rather than color. Sometimes I notice he will only build with a few colors at a time due to how we have them organized. In the next few years, I may have to adjust this set-up a bit for him, but for now, at age six; it's working so well!

Nothing makes me quite as happy in our playroom as rainbow order! Having all of our LEGO bricks organized by color helps with clean-up time. Liam can put all of his creations away on his own. I made it so that a few of the clear drawers are open for creations he doesn't want to break apart or ones he is working on. I also have one drawer designated for mini figures.

Liam gets to decide what stays on the top of our cube shelf. He has some Sonic sets that he likes to play with. And he's really into space. He likes to build rockets that he'll play with after he's built them. I've also seen him creating biomes and world. He likes to keep those together as well. And, my latest favorite is when he's began to recreate Walt Disney World attractions!

The rule for this top shelf has been once it starts to get too cluttered, he needs to make decisions about each the builds until it's not so cluttered anymore. Otherwise, it gets out of control. And there are 4 more of us living here...

He has a few decluttering choices:

He can break a build apart to save in our LEGO bags to build again later on.

Break the build apart and put it back into the colored drawers (if it was one of his own creations).

Move it to one of the permanent top shelves.

Keep it there for playing.

Let's talk about these amazing storage zipper bags. These are so wonderful for LEGO sets because of the pocket in the front to keep the instruction manuals. These work wonderfully for small-medium sized sets.

Let's dive into it! I know you want those links!
